"What is the greatest accomplishment of your life?"
My greatest accomplishment thus far has been overcoming an abusive and unhealthy relationship to be where I am today. Abuse takes on many forms and is often much different than what it is portrayed on television and in movies. Verbal abuse is just as crippling as physical abuse and causes just as much damage. I was told that I was incapable of so many things and called so many degrading names that I began to believe them. I was controlled in ways that were also degrading and made me feel nearly worthless. I felt ugly, lost, and completely unhappy every day.
I knew I had to leave that place, but I didn't know how and at times I was too afraid to even try. I honestly believed that I would never be able to make it on my own and that I needed him. That was what he wanted me to believe and by staying there, I was allowing him to continue treating me that way. As I reflect on the time I spent with him, I am still extremely grateful for what that experience has taught me and for the courage that it allowed me to discover within myself. It took quite a few years, but I can honestly say that I have proved him wrong. Not only was I more than capable, but I accomplished everything he told me I couldn't and for that I am extremely proud.-
