Not the Girl in the Mirror
She is not the girl who he sees in the mirror.
The one with the mischievous smile.
She is not the girl in the long black robe and red lipstick.
The letters she writes are not her own,
But those carefully constructed by a poet.
With skillful hands and sultry eyes,
She painfully tames his ego,
Pretending to be the girl in the dreams
That he so often speaks about.
But she is a simple girl.
One who loves and is often alone,
The girl he got to know
Through long walks and conversation,
Living for the moment
As young lovers often do.
Now, carrying with her this heavy burden,
Her reflection an eerie stranger
Who even she cannot bear to look at,
Slowly crumbling
Beneath the weight of strangers' expectations
And silent dreams that will never come true.-
